C2E2 Report!

Hello everybody. I just got back from C2E2 and I’m here to give you a quick report on what happened. I was in Artist Alley, selling copies of Star Crossed Galaxy and TwilightPop. I won’t be able to get into too much detail here but if anyone is interested check out my personal blog. Artist Alley was absolutely amazing. I was in a very great row with some incredible artists. I spent the weekend chatting with my neighbors, giving advice to the next generation of writers and artists, selling some comics and getting lost in Chicago.

Friday was a pretty good day. I made some new contacts and sold some comics. Looking back Friday really was a good starter day. It was pretty quiet and not terribly busy. I really regret not touring the show floor and visiting some publishers that day. Saturday was a bit livelier, and I sold about the same amount of comics I did on Friday. I already exceeded the high end sales goal after today, so I was pretty excited. I met way more up and coming artists on Saturday, but I met more professionals on Friday. It seemed pretty balanced. I was able to step away for a bit on Saturday to take a look at the floor. There definitely were some awesome things around. The SHIELD car, Thor’s hammer, all the crazy costumes, it was a lot to take in. Sunday was a completely different beast. I made more sales on Sunday than on Friday and Saturday combined. I met more upcoming rookies and even more pros. It was just insane. I was actually relieved when things finally began to calm down.

Overall the show was incredible. We sold much better than I ever could have hoped and I made more contacts and industry buddies than I thought I would. TwilightPop Productions has made a name for itself in Chicago. Now it’s time to see where we go next! - Ryan

Greetings and a Happy New Year! 1st update for 2011 below:

TwilightPop will be represented at this year's C2E2 by Star Crossed Galaxy writer Ryan Keyworth. Amin Amat, the cover artist for TwilightPop might be making the rounds and dropping by as well.

TwilightPop #2 will be released in Feb or March. The cover is being inked as we speak and colored after that!

Star Crossed Galaxy #2 will be released in March or April. Artist Matt Martin is finishing up on the pencils. Congrats to Matt and wife for their bundle of joy, Amelie!

Black Cathedral #2 is in search of a new artist to replace the awesome Daniele Cosentino. Anyone up for it?

An Interview with Star Crossed Galaxy Artist - Matt Martin

The first of our planned interviews with TwilightPop's wonderfully brilliant and gifted creators... Matt Martin! Read on below to get to know SCG's artist and his work.

- Tell us a bit about yourself. Where are you from and what experience do you have?
So, my name's Matt and I was born and live in the UK. I'm married and work full-time in marketing, but like all guys and gals who work in the small press arena my dream is to be able to draw comics for a living. I don't have any formal training or experience but am a genuine comics fan and have learnt all I know from studying those I artists I admire as well as through working with some great people.

- What drew you to the Star Crossed Galaxy project?
I had a really good experience working with Bernie on another project that didn't end up panning out so when he approached me with the chance to work with him on a new project through his own publishing house I jumped at the chance. What made it even more appealing was the story Ryan had crafted which looked like (and has turned out to be) a blast to draw.

- When you received the script, what was your initial reaction?
I couldn't wait to get started. The characters Ryan has created meant I could have fun with them visually, plus it gave me the chance to try some sci-fi stuff that I've never done before like the space scenes.

- Tell us about your creative process – what do you use to draw, where you do it, when, etc.
In terms of when and where, I try and squeeze it in whenever I can. Working full time in a pretty intense job means that drawing is my escape (and luckily my wife is really supportive) so I tend to draw most evenings and at the weekend. I have my own little study where my lightbox and PC are set up so I lock myself away in there much to my wife's delight as it means my cr*p (as she likes to call it) doesn't escape in to the rest of the house!

When it comes to creating a page the first stage is to read through Ryan's script and draw a quick thumbnail. I find my initial reaction to a page is my best so I want to capture it as quickly as I can. I'll then create a half size rough which is more detailed to send across to the guys for approval before blowing it up and lightboxing the final pencils. I'm also going to be grey-scaling issue 2 so my final stage is to scan the page in and add the greys. You can actually see a more detailed process on the boards.

- How do you go about planning and / or establishing the visual style?
My style is really a reflection of those artists and comics I love. Joe Mad was the reason I got in to comics and still remains the biggest influence on my style. I love comics for the art so look to a lot of the current guys to inspiration not just in style but also in story-telling. Currently I'm loving Stuart Immonen, Ryan Ottley and Sean Murphy.

- What was the most difficult scene to draw so far?
For me it was actually the fight scene, for some reason I find these more difficult to do than the talking head pages. I was anticipating it being the space scenes but these came a lot easier than I was expecting.

- What was the scene that was the most fun to draw?
I really enjoyed the opening few pages where we were introducing the characters, but the most fun I'm having is with the second issue as my style is evolving so I'm pushing myself more. Ryan has also written some great dialogue so I'm able to play around with expressions and gesture.

- What other creative endeavours have you been involved in?
I've done a number of pitches with friends and a few small press bits, but nothing that has seen print. We've got some plans post Star Crossed but other than that I'm just happy to be working with the guys on issue 2.

- What’s up next for you?
Well outside of the comics we're due our first baby in November so that's by far the biggest and most important thing. Once I've adjusted to the complete lack of sleep I just want to keep creating and pushing myself to break in to the industry and make a living from the thing I love.

Both our initial launch books are on track! Thanks to the artists who are brilliant and committed. Black Cathedral and Star Crossed have only a handful of pages to be penciled and inked before they are finished by end April.

After that, it will be lettered and prepared for pre-press before going to Kablam or Comixpress. Tentative launch is Q3 for Star Crossed and Black Cathedral. Please have a look at the 4 page previews at the links above.

Free Comic Book Day 2010

The FCBD is a single day - the first Saturday in May each year - when participating comic book shops around the world give away comic books absolutely FREE* to anyone who comes into their stores. *Check with your local shop for their participation.

TwilightPop is aiming to have something ready and suitable for this! Perhaps an 8-12 page primer to introduce new readers to our core books.

PIP - Projects in Pipeline

Happy and excited to say that we have 2 very strong projects in the works right now. One is a sci-fi galaxy spanning series while another is a dark fantasy series. We are targeting to print by mid-2010.

A third project is also being discussed and a fourth will possibly be a reprinting of an original miniseries into a TPB. Check back often for more updates!

Diamond announced they will not ship any new comics for the last week of December. What some would call a sad week without our favorite mainstream titles, can actually be an opportunity. This vacancy allows independent and small press comic book creators to claim this week as their own.

Indy Comic Book Week is not only an event, but also a call to action. Retailers should take this as an opportunity to showcase local independent talent on the new release shelves and fans are encouraged to break from their buying habits and try something new.

TwilightPop Productions is an independent production studio which focuses on publishing for both print and digital media. We are always looking for quality creator-owned projects from all genres in the form of one-shots, graphic novels and limited series.

It is difficult to break into comics and this industry we are passionate about. The hard truth is that the majority of creators are not ready for professional work. Either they don't have the necessary skills at present time or they are unable to work under a regular deadline and produce quality work. TwilightPop Productions is here to assist.

Typically, we’re looking for works of between 40 and 120 pages (equivalent to 2-6 issues). However, we’re willing to consider shorter stories (for our anthology). We ask that you provide 6-10 fully-illustrated sequential pages. Currently TwilightPop and it's manga/manhwa sister imprint TwilightTokyo is only looking for black & white or grayscale projects. Color projects will be in the pipeline in the future. We rarely look at a script or plot synopsis that is not accompanied by completed art. We are unable to post deal terms, page rates or schedules. Any such information pertaining to these topics will be discussed if we are interested in pursuing work with you.

We strongly recommend pre-assembled creative teams as with limited manpower, it would be hard for us to find the time to put together artists and writers on a regular basis. However if you have a quality project without an artist, we might help in your search to find, but not to hire one. Creators must send their submission electronically through email in order to save you time and money. When submitting work through email, please save it as low-resolution PDF files or in JPG format. Once a submission has been received, the work will be evaluated, and you will be contacted via the email address that you have provided. If we feel the work is strong and has a potential target audience, you will be contacted about your proposed project. Please allow at least 1 week before contacting us about your submission as even though we are small, we receive a lot of submissions. It takes a little while to get through everything and respond. Rest assured if your submission is good enough you will receive a response.

Prepare a professional package. Give our editors enough information to see your vision the way you see it. Email your submission to twilightpop@gmail.com

At TwilightPop Productions:

Our editorial review evaluates your book for quality and publishing readiness. You will receive a general overview of your comic book and constructive comments towards improvement, if any.
You don’t pay to get your book published. We take the risks of publishing away from you and lay out the initial printing, marketing and distribution costs.
You retain 100% of your creative rights. We only acquire publishing rights in order to get your book out there. Creators receive back-end pay, via Paypal on a periodic basis, for their works (no page rates) and the profit split is 60/40 with 60% going to the creative team and 40% to TwilightPop.
Majority of the books will be sold online and some to distributors or at conventions as we feel that we can do a much better job promoting and selling the comics ourselves online and at conventions.
We've chosen to bypass the traditional Direct Market method, in favor of a Print on Demand (POD) model, by reducing the financial hurdles of the direct market.
You may buy copies of the book at a significant discount from us and sell it yourself.
We provide you with the freedom to blaze your own trail to success!
